How to Draw a Prairie Dog

Did you know that prairie dogs are pretty much cousins of the squirrels in your backyard? Their heads look a lot alike, that's for sure. Their other biological relatives include groundhogs, chipmunks, marmots and woodchucks.

Prairie Dogs also apparently have a vocabulary that is more advanced than any other small animal that's been decoded. That's pretty amazing.

As I have said before, good drawing comes from noticing the details. So if your students need a visual example of how a prairie dog compares to a squirrel, feel free to use my squirrel tutorial found HERE.

I recommend having your younger students focus more getting the features right in their drawing, but older ones could be challenged add some extra shading when they color. This sample prairie dog was filled with just one crayon, pressing harder on the back and head, and lighter on the belly. The trick is to softly blend the edges of the two, but it's can be done with a little patience.
