how to draw a person from different angles

example of different head angles

The Bones Forms

To describe the head from whatsoever angle yous must starting time understand its bones structure. Look past all the distracting details and visualize the underlying forms. This ability to simplify tin can be practical to the features of the face, but when starting the cartoon you could expect even further. Ignore even the features and simplify to the most bones form of the caput. I utilise a method taught by Andrew Loomis in his book, "Drawing the Caput & Easily".

The head deconstructed into its basic forms, is a sphere as the cranium and a cake as the jaw and cheek bones.

basic forms

A Sphere as the Cranium

The sides of the caput are flat, so we can slice off a piece from both sides of the ball. From contour, this aeroplane will be a perfect circumvolve, but when drawing it from any other angle, it will appear to be an oval because of perspective. Divide this oval into quadrants. The vertical line represents the offset of the jaw. The horizontal line represents the forehead line. The top and bottom of the oval help yous discover the hair line and the lesser of the nose.

A Block as the Jaw and Cheek Bones

Adhere the shape of the jaw. The top volition showtime at the forehead line and the dorsum volition start at the center of the oval. This is a three-D volume with a forepart plane, side planes, and bottom aeroplane (bottom plane is seen from some angles).

Constructing From Whatsoever Angle

Step ane – Decide the angle of the ball

The bending of the caput is established at the very beginning of the drawing with the brawl. All three axes must be addressed:

X Axis - The upward and downward tilt is established past the angles of the horizontal and vertical lines in the oval. Also, on farthermost up tilts and down tilts, the thirds volition be foreshortened because of perspective.

rotate x

Y Axis - The management the caput is turning (left or correct) is established by the width of the oval. As the head turns towards you, you tin see more of the front end of the face and less of the side, so the oval representing the side will get narrower. Similarly, when the caput turns away from you, more of the side plane is revealed and the oval will appear wider.

rotate y

Z Axis - The twist is established by the angle of the eye line, the angle of the oval and the placement of the oval on the ball.

rotate z

Step 2 – Observe the thirds

Subsequently establishing the angle of the ball, split the face into thirds. The distance between the hairline and brow-line should be the same as the distance betwixt the brow-line and lesser of the nose. Add together that same distance to find the chin. Detect how the  hairline and nose-line marshal with the superlative and lesser bottom of the oval when wrapped around the face up. Imagine the head every bit a box. The thirds must be wrapped around the side plane and front plane.

find the thirds

Stride 3 – Add together the jaw

A common error at this point is to make the jaw too long in comparing to the ball. Make sure to measure your thirds correctly and that they relate correctly to the ball. Discover how the shape of the jaw changes from various angles.

Step 4 – Add together the features

With this basic structure properly established, it becomes much easier to add the features in the right place. Check dorsum for more information about specific features in a later on post.

Practice inventing the head from all possible angles. Get a sketchbook and fill an entire folio with little heads. When drawing without reference photos, you quickly realize where your weaknesses are because you tin can't rely on copying. Yous can merely work with what you lot know.
